Theatre Classes
Theatre 1
(Grade Level 9-12 / 1 semester)
Introduces students to the fundamentals of stage performance. Through a variety of performance experiences and exercises, students learn to manipulate their voices and bodies in order to express themselves creatively. Students increase their confidence and comfort in front of an audience while learning to develop creative solutions to performance challenges. This course will explore the role that theatrical performance has played throughout human history and examines the "human experience." Student are required to attend one live theatrical performance outside of class and memorize multiple scenes and monologues.
Acting 1 - Intermediate Acting
(Grade Level 10-12) Prerequisite Theatre 1 and Teacher Signature
Required -continues the basic techniques of theatrical play students learned about in Theatre 1 and begin to teach the techniques required for more sophisticated characterization. This course will place major emphasis on creating dynamic and engaging performances by practicing the techniques of Robert Cohen, a master in the art of acting. Students will explore the art of acting through scene work, monologue work, play study, character analysis, theatre exercises, rehearsal technique, solo and group performance art, and a final one-act play production.
Acting 2
(Grade Level 11-12)
Prerequisite Theatre 1, Acting 1, and Teacher Signature Required Continues the learning and growth of students in the field of acting by focusing on the production of a play. Students will audition and be cast in a play to be rehearsed over the course of the year. The course culminates in a final performance for the community in the Overland Theater. Students will gather props, costumes and set pieces for their performance. This class will continue the emphasis on creating dynamic and engaging theatrical performances throughout the work of the actor and director. Students are required to attend some rehearsals outside of the normal hours of class. This course will prepare students for college throughout the learning of essential collaborative and individual theatrical skills that apply to all subject areas.
Advanced Acting (CE)
(Grade Level 11-12) Acting 1 or Acting 2, Audition, and Teacher Signature Required
Designed to continue the process of acting techniques that we learned about in Acting 1 and begin to apply those techniques to the production process of one-act, sketch-comic, and improvisational live performances. The secondary purpose of advanced acting is to prepare you for professional auditions in the community or auditions for acting schools as you move on from high school.
Theatre Clubs
Drama Club
Drama Club members work on the many theatrical productions mounted at Overland each year. Students may participate in the realms of publicity, staging, lighting, sound, stage management, directing, playwriting, acting, set design, program, set construction, props, makeup, costumes, and pit orchestra. The main activity of the club is the production of plays, other comedic presentations, and technical support/production for other events taking place in the OHS Auditorium. There is a yearly retreat for all Drama Club members and Thespians.
Thespians - OHS Troupe No. 2762
Overland High School's Thespian Troupe (troupe # 2762) is a group of elite drama/theatre students - those who have fulfilled the requirements for becoming a Thespian: 100 hours of work in two different aspects of the theatre (including, but not limited to, acting, directing, publicity, lights, sound, stage management, set construction, pit orchestra, costumes, props, makeup, and playwriting). Every two years, the Thespians travel to New York City to sight-see and attend theatrical productions on and off Broadway.
Props & Costumes
Support the plays and musicals at OHS by getting all of the props needed for the shows, preparing the costumes, and then working on show nights behind the scenes to make sure the show is ready. Students must apply and be academically eligible.
